History

The 18th Regiment of Infantry was organized by the direction of the President on May 3, 1861, and was given approval by the congress on July 29th of the same year. The Regiment was organized at Camp Thomas, Columbus, OH under the Command of Colonel Henry B. Carington. Their first recruits opened the camp on July 10, 1861. The 18th while recruiting received their fair share of down and out men, such as criminals on the run, and unemployed men. Most of the unit was just the average American citizen. Also, the 18th recruited a large amount of Immigrants mostly German and Irish. There were also members from other European Countries. They were a proverbial melting pot.
